CHRISTUS Health launches new safety initiatives for patients and visitors

CHRISTUS Health announced today the installation of a new weapons detection system designed to enhance Associate, patient and visitor safety protocols.

Installed at the entrance of the emergency room at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler, the Xonar Threat Detection System uses artificial intelligence (AI) to detect firearms, ceramic weapons, explosives and other threats using shape, material and dimensional analysis.

“In the emergency department, our focus is always on delivering timely, compassionate care to every patient who comes through our doors,” said Dr. Colt Smithson, chief of emergency medicine for CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. “This investment in enhanced security helps support that mission by creating an environment where patients, families and Associates can feel safe, supported and focused on care."

Beginning June 19, patients and visitors entering the emergency room will be screened for threats, with CHRISTUS Health security on-site to assist and support.

The installation at Mother Frances is part of a system-wide initiative from CHRISTUS Health that includes Xonar system installations at facilities in Alice, Beeville, Corpus Christi and Kleberg.

Roy E. Alston, PhD., vice president of security and public safety for CHRISTUS Health, said up to 13 more systems will be installed at CHRISTUS locations in the future.
